Marshall Field & Company was an iconic department store in Chicago formed in the late 1800s. It grew to become a major chain and was a favorite of mine. As a child we would have family outings and go downtown and eat in the famous Walnut Room Restaurant in Field's.
This clock became Marshal Field's logo being installed on the State Street store in late 1897. The clock was immortalized by Norman Rockwell when he drew a picture of it for the cover of the Saturday Evening Post in 1945.
Much to my dismay Marshall Field & Company was acquired by Macy's in 2005. Macy's decision to keep the clock on the building made a lot of people very happy. Even though it has been Macy's for almost 4 years it will always be Marshall Field's to me.
(The Chicago sign in this photograph is that of the Chicago Theater.)

What a really cool shot! Love how the clock and the arch frames the background picture! I used to love Marshal Field's - now all we have is TJ Max.
ReplyDeleteI love all the contrasts in this shot. The old clock with the newer signs and architecture, the green clock and orange "Chicago". Very nice!
ReplyDeleteGreat shot Mary Lou, the composition is fabulous. That great street! As a kid going to the flagship Fields at Christmas was so magical. It's an amazing building.
ReplyDeleteWhat a really good shot and such vibrant colours. This posy was picked up by the followers thingy so one of us fixed it, it works Mary Lou. Nice Spring Look.
ReplyDeleteGreat image . I probably saw that clock but don't remember.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great clock, and together with your story feels very nostalgic. I'm glad Macy's kept it!
ReplyDeleteVery nice image. Love the history too!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great shot! The clock is absolutely gorgeous...thanks for the info too!
ReplyDeleteIt's a treat for me to see this. My father's first and middle names were Marshall Fields. We never really knew if he had been named after the Chicago department store but he was born and raised in Illinois.
ReplyDeleteGreat composition in the photo and I love the clock juxtaposed with the Chicago sign! I visited Chicago just for one day, and all I remember is the Marshall Fields store and how wonderful it was. In New England, we used to have Filene's - now bought by Macy's. Macy's just doesn't measure up...
ReplyDeleteIt will always be Marshall Fields to me too! I love how you've captured to clock with the orange Chicago theatre sign in the background...great color contrast.
