86 Environmental Portraits

This forest preserve's prairie burn occurs in the Spring and Fall each year. The wind speed, wind direction and the humidity are the deciding factors as to which site to burn. The fire cleans the prairie of weeds and allows for more growth of the native plants. It is the most efficient and economical way of managing the landscape. The burns are done by well-trained forest preserve staff and volunteers.

This challenge has opened my eyes to so many things that have always been there and I never noticed them. This is another one to add to the list!!

  2. Went past a burn off yesterday but couldn't stop without having the opportunity to photograph an horrendous prang - so didn't stop. Love the openness of the plains the photo is most descriptive.

  3. The idea of control burns is not a new concept. The Native Indians did it centuries ago. Some seeds will not sprout without the fire. Ponderosa Pines are one of them, but there are others as well. Farmers use it (especially in the growing of plants for seed) to keep out unwanted plants. I'm glad they practice it there. You did a swell job in showing the burn. I like the contrasts of the terrain. trees, plants and the colors.

  4. What a "HOT" image - funny how we ignore the things we see often, and more than often, those are the things that make the most interesting images! Nice job on this!
