As I was strolling through the woods on a beautiful day I looked up and saw this tent caterpillar cocoon. These larvae are in the last stage of developement. They have formed their cocoon inside the web in this tree. Since they are destructive the cocoons/webs should be destroyed if possible.

Destructive, but absolutely fascinating. Shows even the worse culprits of Mother Nature has redeeming features: these are dynamite architects. Love the image!
ReplyDeleteWhat a good shot, the focus is perfect on the tent. On the west coast tent caterpillars have cycles, when the populations get high every ten years or so it seems like a biblical plague.
ReplyDeleteSuper find - this is awesome - love the clarity and the details in the tent!
ReplyDeleteFabulous photo! Love the DOF and the gorgeous blue sky. I found one of those in one of my trees last spring. We snipped off the branch it was on and burned the tent. They'll strip a tree of its leaves in no time!
